What Software is Used for Animal DNA Testing?

The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory uses STRand software that was developed at the UCDavis Genetics Lab. STRand can automate and/or speed up the analysis of DNA fragmentation length polymorphism samples that run on a fluorescence-based gel and capillaries system.

By using this software system the Veterinary Genetics Lab can analyze highly complex and multiplex, short tandem repeat markers (STR).

What is the Cost?
Prices vary between tests but on average, a test will run between $40 and $100 USD.

What is the turnaround time?

Depending on the order in which your requested test was received will determine when you will receive the results. To find out more information about the turnaround time please look at the page specific to the test you are ordering.

Rush testing orders are not available as every sample received is processed as soon as it is delivered in the order it is received.

How Can I see the results?
For non-contract testing results, the laboratory will send the report directly to the owner or agency listed on the submission form. If one of the on contract registries submits the form, the results are sent electronically back to that agency.

Results are not given via phone, but can be e-mailed or faxed once the appropriate submission form is received.

Accreditation and Awards

The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory Forensic Unit of UCDavis holds accreditation from the ASCLD/LAB-International program and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Not only was the UCDavis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory Forensic Unit the first crime laboratory devoted to categorizing and profiling animal DNA, but it is the only domesticated animal DNA testing center accredited by a state department of public safety.

Thus all programs meet strict quality control measurements in order to keep their accreditation.

As one of the largest animal DNA testing facilities in the world, the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory Forensic Unit is able to provide testing services not only to governmental agencies such as federal, state, and local law enforcement units but also to civilians in the public.

PROS
